ReviewThe jokey, conversational style of the Complete Idiot’s Guide series is better suited to some of its many subjects than to others, but for the Guide to Grammar and Style, it works. This book might not be appropriate for professional proofreaders in search of the definitive use of the en dash, but it is a solid, amusing volume for those who daydreamed through grade school and would like to brush up on the fundamentals. Puns, silly humor, and hyperbole abound, but so do the entertaining quotations from beloved masters of the English language that author Laurie E. Rozakis has managed to dig up. For every “The rules of standard written English are … more frightening than a sail on the Titanic,” there is an amusing tidbit such as this one, courtesy of Calvin Trillin: “Whom is a word invented to make everyone sound like a butler. Nobody who is not a butler has ever said it out loud without feeling just a little bit weird.” For every “Like my thighs, the distinction between that and which is becoming less firm,” we have someone such as James Thurber to show us how to break a rule in style. “When I split an infinitive,” Thurber is said to have admonished a meddlesome editor, “it is going to damn well stay split!” The text is highly energetic, and Rozakis cuts to the chase. For instance, she summarizes one chapter this way: “Don’t be a sexist pig; ditch doublespeak; end euphemisms; can clichés.” And she offers us these wise words, from Thomas Jefferson: “The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.”

From the Back Cover With this guide you’ll gain what you need to be a great communicator at home and on the job. It provides solid information on grammatical rules and how and when to use them, friendly advice for adding variety and style to your writing, and tips, definitions, and warnings to help you along the way.

But the English language is so screwed up that even experts admit to having trouble with it. This book will help explain some of the more problematic parts of grammar while keeping you entertained. I’ve read dozens of books on grammar, but they were all very dry and confusing. This is the first one that makes it all seem so simple. The author gives hints for remembering the rules about many of the more confusing elements of our language–like who/whom–which makes this book even more valuable. Through exercises and interesting sidenotes and facts, you’ll learn spelling tricks, the correct uses for colons and semicolons, when to use ‘lay’ and when to use ‘lie,’ and gobs of other things. Confused about predicates and prepositions? No problem. This book explains it. Need help with cover letters or memos? Bingo–this book will assist. It’s a wonderful book and one I can’t live without. The best grammar book I own.

It has all the content of a dried-up grammar reference text, and NONE of the pain. Laurie is funny, direct, and great at communicating the relationship between grammatical functions and the purpose of writing.

This text can be used as a regular reference to check your work, or you can read it straight through. (Let’s see someone say that about Scott Foresman!) Thanks, Dr. Rozakis.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful.
Informal and General Approach
By Todd Hawley
The subject of grammar is one that always had me cringing fairly quickly in English and Journalism classes I had in grammar school and again in high school. This is material that more often than not comes off as very dry. And yet grammar is very important in producing clear, concise and quality writing. This book goes a long way in demystifying and explaining the basics of grammar. And it does it in an informal way that makes it easier to grasp all the important concepts of grammar and style.

Every grammatical article, be it noun, verb, dangling participle, or adverb is covered here. Starting off with a basic over view of grammar in the first few chapters, the book then goes on to discuss parts of speech, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, prepositional phrases, clauses, even chapters on proper punctuation and spelling. It does all this in a way that keeps your attention. If only my English teachers way back when could have kept this material interesting.

There’s even a section near the book’s end about business writing, be it cover letters, resumes, memos or email. This proves how important good clear writing is in the business world as well as everywhere else. And also, this is a book you can refer back to when faced with a “grammar question,” since it’s also a good “grammar reference” book. If you do a lot of writing, either for business or pleasure this is an excellent book to have around.

The book is well thought out and it is obvious that a lot of planning has gone into its layout in order to make this book exceptional as a guide. Its easy to understand language and well presented format sets it apart as a workbook. Brodison attacks the problems associated with weight loss programs by first dispelling the many myths that abound surrounding this topic. He then continues to explain how the body works to use fat as an energy source and reinforces what he has just explained with fitness tips following each topic mentioned. The use of tables to provide easy reference to such things as exercise regimens or muscle training exercises is consistent with his illustrative style. He talks about the three main body types those being Ectomorphs, Endomorphs and Mesomorphs and goes on to discuss how we should be making exercise a priority in our lives. After giving examples how to incorporate exercise seamlessly into our daily routine Brodison then introduces the topic of nutrition as the other key element to effective weight loss. Good nutrition is an essential part of weight loss and Brodison goes into detail to explain the complexities of the Glycaemic index of foodstuffs.

The constant dieting and fad exercise equipment have not worked and left me feeling like a failure (with a larger waistline!). I finally found a reference that was easy to read and written in a way that was easy to understand. I read ‘Secrets to effective weight loss’ by Shaun Brodison over one weekend and found myself to be motivated to exercise and increase daily incidental activity (i.e. increasing the amount of physical movement during the day such as walking to the shops insead of driving my car, etc.). This book has many photos that visually show the exercises so I started to exercise immediately. I really liked the photos and the fact that the model looked like a fit and healthy person rather than someone who looked false with plastic surgery. I also immediately implemented the 12 week program that has has worked wonders – i feel fitter and healthier than ever before.

I would like to thank Mr. Brodison for the fantastic book that he has written and the difference that it has made in my life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and believe it to be an essential tool in the commencement of any weight loss program!

I was by no means obese but definitely could have stood to loose a few pounds and this book helped me do just that. I really like this book because it made “loosing weight” realistic. It had helpful hints and a step-by-step guide that can fit perfectly into my lifestyle. The author realizes his readers are people, people who probably have busy life’s, and yes losing weight is a priority but they don’t have 3 hours a day to devout to body building. This book gives you suggestions on how to improve your body one step at a time. It never made me feel overwhelmed and I am confident in my appearance.

From Publishers WeeklyFollowing the success of his 2010 21-Day Vegan Kickstart online program, physician Barnard (Breaking the Food Seduction; Foods That Fight Pain, etc.) reworks his material for this guided comprehensive lifestyle change to be featured as a program on PBS stations. Day by day, Barnard discusses vegan choices, benefits and challenges. Readers will learn to substitute vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and plant-based protein for fatty animal products (meat, dairy, fish) and sugary fare; eat vegan in social situations and while traveling; promote weight loss, energy and sleep; relieve pain; prevent or reverse diabetes, heart disease and some cancers; and create meals that, Barnard contends, fulfill all nutritional requirements. Home food preparation is key, but Barnard offers options for dining at restaurants and fast-food chains and using convenience foods. While readers must commit to food shopping and cooking, Barnard motivates with promises of quick results and insights from medical professionals and celebrities, and tempts with generous breakfasts (pancakes with maple syrup; burritos with potatoes and spinach), easy desserts (a delicious chocolate cake), and assurances of weight loss without deprivation, calorie counts, and exercise routines. I was skeptical but I loved the premise, try it for 21 Days and then evaluate how you feel. For me, the results were enough to really change my opinion on a lot of things. After 21 days, my insomnia went away, i wasn’t tired after work and (hate to say it) but going number two has never been easier. I guess these were my issues i wanted to cure, although losing a few lbs was also nice.

Trosclair
I purchased the Food Lover Fat Loss System which is the best thing I ever spent my money on. When I saw Robert came out with a new book, Diet-free for Life, I e-mailed him to ask him what could he possible say more than what was in the system I purchased. He said it was a mindset makeover. That statement struck me hard because I always new the battle ground was in the mind. I thought if he can take the information I learned in the FLFLS and change my mindset about eating I would really be able to reach my goal weight. I am almost finish reading his new book and I can tell you it has a huge influence on the way my mind looks at food. I strongly recommend you get both the system and the book. It will be the last dollar you spend on diets and I spent and tried it all.

I enjoyed the recipes in the book as well.

Take Control of Your Cholesterol— Without Drugs

If you are one of the nearly 100 million Americans struggling with high cholesterol, then Dr. Janet Brill offers you a revolutionary new plan for taking control of your health—without the risks of statin drugs. With Dr. Brill’s breakthrough Cholesterol Down Plan, you simply add nine “miracle foods” to your regular diet and thirty minutes of walking to your daily routine. That’s all. This straightforward and easy-to-follow program can lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by as much as 47 percent in just four weeks.

Cholesterol Down explains Dr. Brill’s ten-point plan as well as the science behind it. You’ll learn how each miracle food affects LDL cholesterol and how the foods work together for maximum effect, as well as:

• How eating whole grains helps reduce LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream
• Why antioxidants keep plaque from building up in your arteries
• How certain steps change the structure of LDL cholesterol particles (and why it’s best for them to be large and fluffy)
• Why walking just thirty minutes a day lowers “bad” cholesterol and cuts dangerous belly fat

With everything you need to stay focused on the plan, including a daily checklist, a six-month chart for racking LDL cholesterol changes, tools for assessing your risk level for cardiovascular disease, sample weekly menus, and even heart-healthy recipes, Cholesterol Down is the safe and effective alternative or complement to statin drugs.

262 of 271 people found the following review helpful.
Must Reading for Those Interested in Their Health
By Dr. Jonathan Dolhenty
I have a personal interest in this particular subject so I was pleased to be asked to read and review “Cholesterol Down,” a book which definitely should be read by anyone with a current cholesterol problem and, for that matter, by anyone in the younger set who wants to prevent such a problem from occurring in his or her future. If I had had this information many decades ago, I probably could have prevented or at least delayed the coronary problems I am now fighting. After my first heart attack five years ago, I had to face the fact that some extraordinary changes were necessary and at the top of that list was diet. I was placed on a “Mediterranean” diet which is very similar to the diet which Dr. Brill recommends in her book.

Dr. Brill suggests ten simple steps to lower one’s cholesterol without resorting to prescription drugs. I am all in favor of that because nothing disturbs me more within the medical area of my life than the taking of prescription drugs. I try to avoid that sort of thing like the plague. I much prefer to utilize “natural” remedies whenever and wherever possible. So far I’ve been fairly successful, having to take only one prescription medication (an anti-clotting drug) and only because I have found no comparable natural remedy.

This book is divided into two parts plus an appendix. The first part of the book provides the reader with information about cholesterol and heart disease, basically the scientific foundations upon which Dr. Brill’s ten-step plan is based. This can be read first but it is not necessary. I read the second part first, which actually describes the ten-step cholesterol down plan, because I was specifically interested in reviewing what the author suggests; one can always go back to the scientific rationale later. Additionally, in the appendix, Dr. Brill provides some valuable aids such as a daily checklist, progress chart, a sample meal and exercise plans, some heart-healthy recipes (very important!), and a way of determining one’s risk of heart disease. But for those fighting heart disease or wanting to try to prevent that scourge, it is the ten-step program that is the “heart” of the book (sorry for the pun!).

Now, I’m going to briefly review the ten steps Dr. Brill recommends and add a personal touch to each one. If my getting personal bothers you, then this is the time to stop reading this review, purchase the book for yourself, and read your way to healthy living.

Step One: Eat oatmeal. I am so glad that she favors this because that is exactly what I’ve been doing for the past five years. Actually I eat a double-helping six mornings a week (I’m a big guy and one helping just doesn’t do the job). On Sundays, by the way, my cardiologist permits me to have a breakfast of two eggs, hashbrowns (cooked in Canola oil), and lean chicken. But the oatmeal is essential and I have it with a tablespoon of milled flaxseed, a handful of raisins, a touch of cinnamon (allegedly helps to control blood sugar), and some no-fat milk.

Step Two: Eat almonds. I have not been doing this; it’s the first I’ve heard about it. Based on the science behind this recommendation, however, I have to give it serious consideration.

Step Three: Eat flaxseeds. OK, no problem here. I am getting flaxseed with my oatmeal and also with some other items I eat every day, including the whole grain breads and deserts I bake. I am sold on the flaxseed situation and would recommend it to everyone. It’s a great way to get the essential omega-3 fatty acids so necessary to human life.

Step Four: Take Metamucil. Well, I’ve never taken Metamucil in my life. And, to be honest, I have some personal concerns about this recommendation. Dr. Brill does, to be sure, present the science behind this suggestion, but I’m going to have to really think about this one. I’ve always looked upon Metamucil as a remedy for those with constipation problems and (thank the fates!) that is a problem I don’t have to concern myself with, at least for now. But I will think about this recommendation, even though I don’t intend to implement it immediately.

Step Five: Eat beans. Absolutely no problem. I make my own bean and vegetable soup (using 16 different beans and, yes, made from scratch!) and eat a healthy helping every night at dinner. This is a definite must if you’re serious about your cardiac health.

Step Six: Eat apples. This should be no surprise to anyone. From an early age, I was forced to memorize the proverb “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” And so it apparently does. Since I was so indoctrinated from childhood with this prescription, I have pretty much abided by it. Fortunately I love apples.

Step Seven: Eat margarine with phytosterols. No problem here. I use one of the newer products which are heart-healthy and has been approved by my cardiologist. Anyway, I was never particularly devoted to butter or traditional margarine.

Step Eight: Eat soy protein. I normally get a certain amount of this in many of my meals. I admit to not getting the amount that Dr. Brill recommends. I have some concerns about the amount she suggests, especially since I’ve been reading some scientific reports lately that are critical of consuming large amounts of soy protein, particularly for those of the male gender. For the present, I’ll confine myself to the amount I am currently getting.

Step Nine: Eat garlic. Ah! — music to my ears. I love garlic. I love the taste of garlic. I love the smell of garlic. I use garlic all the time in much of my cooking. I also take a garlic supplement. If there is a true “wonder drug” in nature, I will vote for garlic to assume that status. It is my favorite herb and I think the science clearly supports its beneficial properties, not only for cardiovascular disease but for prevention of cancer as well. I am happy that Dr. Brill recommends garlic to her readers. (But why is it number nine instead of number one?)

Step Ten: Walk. Again, no problem. I either walk thirty or more minutes a day (weather permitting) or I do thirty minutes of aerobic exercises at home. This is easier for me to practice, of course, because I’m from a generation that didn’t spend much time sitting on the couch. We were outside playing, roughhousing, and physically active (pre-TV-computer-video games, of course).

So, considering that I have implemented or regularly practice seven out of the ten steps Dr. Brill recommends, I will give myself an “A-minus” or, at least, a “B-plus.” Furthermore, I intend to keep my copy of this book on my kitchen bookshelf and use it as a continual reference about and a constant reminder of what I ought to be doing to maintain my own health. “Cholesterol Down” is a great self-help book and highly recommended.

ReviewIn The Perricone Weight-loss Diet, the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging reveals the role of internal micro-inflammations, caused mainly by additive-packed foods and a sedentary lifestyle, not only in accelerated aging, but also in unwanted weight gain. The good news he shares is: it is possible to slow down the clock, clear the skin, and shed the pounds by following a diet of whole foods and natural supplements, and by progressively adopting an “anti-inflammatory lifestyle”, including quality sleep and stress-reducing activities (pet lovers will especially appreciate the passage on the healing power of pets.)

If Dr. Perricone’s division of high- versus low-glycemic index foods, and healthy (Omega-3-rich) versus unhealthy fats, doesn’t especially sound like breakout news, he has to be credited for his uniquely convincing way of (re-) laying out these dietary principles, and for incorporating them into a global plan to achieve better health and weight loss. “Treat yourself well and the weight will come off,” he suggests. And this anti-alarmist, anti-paternalistic, and confident delivery (he doesn’t fear complimenting competitor Tammi Flynn on her sensible Three-Apple-a-Day Plan), paired with his stellar success record in the health field (The Perricone Prescription; The Perricone Promise), forces your attention.

Readers will dive effortlessly into the easy-flowing chapters, from “Breaking the Inflammation-Fat Connection” to “The 10 Top Food Groups for Permanent Weight Loss” (headed up with mouthwatering wild Alaskan salmon), to Perricone’s signature threefold plan, which he promises will show dramatic results in as little as 14 days. Complete with a full 14-day meal plan, detailed nutritional information for each recipe, a seafood safety guide, and a supplement and organic food retailer guide, The Perricone Weight-loss Diet will naturally find its place on the eye-level shelf of your home library.– Nathalie Farage
